The first time I was invited on a social ride, I said yes and was genuinely excited – but almost immediately, the “oh no” thoughts crept in. I ended up spending an entire day worrying about what I was getting into… and figuring out which excuse I could use to back out.
What if I was too slow?
What if I didn’t know how to ride in a group?
What if everyone gave me weird looks – at my bike, my kit, or just… me?
Luckily, I ended up joining the ride, and all my doubts were put to shame – it turned out to be nothing like what I had feared.
And now I know: those doubts are completely normal. I’ve spoken to countless riders about their first time joining one of our 2ned Rides.
The truth is, a social ride isn’t about performance – it’s about showing up. It’s about saying hi and sharing an experience with others. The pace is adjusted. The atmosphere is relaxed. And the people who show up? They’re not there to drop anyone – they’re there because it feels good to ride together and be part of something.
So what is a social ride, really?
At its core, a social ride is a group bike ride – usually with a planned route and one or more meeting points. There’s often someone responsible for the ride (commonly called a ride leader) who sets the tone. Maybe there’s a café stop along the way, two distance options to choose from – or just a shared understanding that “we look out for each other.”
At 2ned, that means we always make room for everyone – experienced riders and total newcomers alike. We always follow a no-drop principle, which simply means we ride out together and we return together. And we believe there’s just as much value in the conversations between riders as in the kilometers we cover.
What should you know before showing up?
Honestly, the most important thing is just that you want to be there.
But here are a few good things to know:
Safety & structure
-
Helmets are always required, and your bike should be in good condition.
-
We ride in small groups, with good control and clear communication.
-
We help each other out, and we signal stops, turns, and obstacles along the way.
No drop – everyone out, everyone home
- We always ride with a no-drop principle: we stick together all the way.
- We wait and regroup if someone falls behind or has a flat.
- Community before speed
Different pace groups
- We always split into pace groups, so you’ll be riding with others who go at roughly the same tempo as you.
- You choose the group that feels right – and if you’re unsure, we’re happy to help guide you.
What should you bring?
-
A spare tube.
-
An open mind and a good mood.
No matter your level or how many kilometers you’ve ridden, you’re always welcome with us.
What matters most isn’t how you ride – but that you want to be part of it.
